Kitchen renovation designed for gathering

Kitchen Renovation - Kanata, ON

Project Grove began the best way possible, through a referral from past clients whose kitchen and main floor we had recently renovated. From our very first conversation, it was clear these homeowners took immense pride in their space. They had already invested thoughtfully in renovating their basement and home office and were ready for their main floor to finally reflect the same level of care, intention, and warmth.

Understanding how they live

While the existing kitchen and family room technically worked, they did not support how this couple actually lived. The kitchen felt cramped and disconnected, with tight entry points that made cooking and entertaining frustrating. The long, narrow family room sat underused, even though these clients love to cook and host large family gatherings. They needed a space that could bring people together comfortably, without feeling crowded..

Bringing nature indoors

Beyond function, there was also a strong emotional goal driving the renovation. One of the homeowners is a landscape designer, deeply inspired by the colours and textures found in nature. She wanted the home to feel grounded, warm, and timeless, with an earthy palette that reflected both her profession and her lifestyle. This connection to nature became a guiding thread throughout the entire design process.

The big design move: opening the space

When we began studying the layout, it quickly became clear that opening up the space was key. While there were structural limitations on how many walls could be removed, the wall between the kitchen and family room was a natural opportunity. By removing it and shifting the kitchen into part of the former family room, we were able to completely rethink the flow of the main floor. This single move allowed us to address storage issues, improve circulation, and create a kitchen that finally felt generous and inviting.

The clients immediately embraced the new layout. In addition to expanding the kitchen, we carved out space for a new hallway connecting to the front hall and powder room. This included a large mudroom with a pocket door, adding everyday practicality without disrupting the openness of the main space.

Material and colour choices that feel timeless

Material selection played a major role in achieving the grounded, natural feeling the clients were looking for. We leaned heavily into white oak, incorporating it into the hardwood flooring, hood fan cover, floating shelves, and the island base. These warm wood tones paired beautifully with the rich green cabinetry, a colour choice that feels reminiscent of a forest and the outdoors.

To keep the space calm and timeless, we were intentional about restraint. Pattern was kept to a minimum, allowing the materials themselves to shine. A soft, natural-looking quartz countertop and a matte brick backsplash provide texture without overwhelming the space. In the front hall and mudroom, we selected a tile that subtly emulates paving stones, another quiet nod to the landscape-inspired palette.

The island: heart of the home

At the heart of the kitchen is a custom island that does far more than anchor the room visually. It significantly increases prep space near the stove and provides much-needed seating for everyday meals and larger gatherings alike. Designed to work hard while still feeling inviting, it naturally draws people in, exactly as a kitchen should.

Collaboration and excitement

Throughout the process, the clients were highly engaged and decisive, which helped keep the project moving smoothly. They were quick to make appliance selections and responsive to questions, allowing the design and construction phases to unfold efficiently. One of the most exciting moments for everyone involved was seeing the walls come down. That was when the vision truly started to feel real.

A space that welcomes gatherings

Today, the homeowners describe their space as warm, welcoming, and finally suited to how they live. They were eager to begin entertaining again, something they had struggled to do comfortably before. For us, the most satisfying part of this project is seeing how seamlessly the space now functions. There is significantly more storage, better flow, and a sense of ease that simply was not there before.

A renovation that listens

If we had to sum up this renovation in one sentence, it would be this: a thoughtfully reimagined main floor that brings people together, inspired by nature and designed around real life. More than anything, this project reflects our belief that great design starts with listening. When we understand how you truly want to use your home, we can create spaces that feel not only beautiful but deeply personal and lasting.
