FAQ’s about interior design and renovations in Ottawa
Questions about working with CPI Interiors
-
In a word: organized, but not the stiff kind.
We’re the team that keeps all the moving pieces (and the hundreds of tiny details) under control, so you can actually enjoy the process and make confident decisions without the stress spiral. Most of our clients are balancing busy schedules, careers, family life, and, you know, everything else. They bring us in because they want someone they can trust to lead the way, pull the whole vision together, and make it feel a whole lot less overwhelming (and a lot more fun) than doing it solo.
-
We specialize in full-service interior design, large-scale renovations, furnishings, and whole-home transformations.
A lot of our projects include:
kitchen renovations
bathroom renovations
main floor remodels
custom millwork and cabinetry
furnishing and decorating
full-home renovations
One important note: we only take on full renovations, not partial updates. That means we're not the right fit for projects like a backsplash swap, a shower-only update, or replacing a single element of a room. Our process is built around transforming a space completely, so every decision works together to create a cohesive, finished result.
Our projects are best suited for homeowners who want a fully guided experience and a team to manage every detail from start to finish.
-
After the consultation, we create a clear plan based on the scope of your project.
For furnishing projects, we move into the design phase and begin preparing your presentation, including layouts, selections, samples, and furnishings.
For renovation projects, the next step is a site visit with one of our trusted contractors to confirm measurements and review the scope before design development begins.
From there, our team guides you through each phase of the process, helping you make decisions with clarity and confidence while we coordinate the many moving parts behind the scenes.
-
Not at all.
Many clients come to us with a feeling they want their home to have, but they’re not always sure how to pull everything together.
Part of our role is helping uncover your style, refine your vision, and guide you toward possibilities you may not have considered on your own.
We take the time to understand how you live, what’s important to you, and how you want your home to feel when everything is complete.
That’s where the best design starts.
-
Most of our projects are based in Ottawa and the surrounding area, but we do take on select projects further afield, including cottages and second homes. If you're wondering whether your location works, just ask. We're happy to talk it through. Please note we only work in Ontario.
-
Less than you might think, and that's by design.
Our process works best for clients who want to be guided rather than do the designing themselves. We ask a lot of questions upfront to really understand how you live, what you love, and what matters most to you, and from there, we take the lead on pulling everything together.
That doesn't mean you're not part of the process. You'll review and approve the design at key milestones, and your input shapes every decision we make. But the heavy lifting (sourcing, coordinating, problem-solving, and making sure every detail works together) is on us. That's what we're here for.
Questions about our home renovation services
-
No, one of the perks of working with CPI Interiors is our network of trusted general contractors in Ottawa. We work with a small, trusted group of general contractors and trades we've built strong relationships with over the years. They know our process, our standards, and how we like to work, which keeps projects running smoothly. In most cases, we'll bring in one of our trusted partners rather than working with an outside contractor.
-
One of the biggest misconceptions about renovations is that you should already know what your project "should" cost. Most homeowners don't, and honestly, that's completely normal.
During our consultation, we walk through your home, talk through your goals, and help you land on a realistic investment range based on the scope of work and the level of finish you're after.
We'll often reference past projects of a similar size and complexity to give you a sense of whether your numbers line up with what you're hoping to do. Once the design is finalized and all the selections are made, we provide you with a precise quote.
Our goal is to be upfront and aligned early on, so there are no big surprises down the road.
-
Every project is different, and timelines depend on the scope of work, construction schedules, and product lead times.
For renovations, it really depends on the size and complexity of the project, along with contractor and trade availability. Early on, your lead designer will talk through your goals and ideal timeline so we can set realistic expectations right from the start.
One of the biggest perks of working with a full-service team is that we handle the scheduling, communication, and coordination throughout, keeping things moving as smoothly as possible.
-
In most cases, yes, though it really depends on the scope of the project. A bathroom or main floor renovation often means living around some disruption, while a full-home renovation may require you to move out temporarily. We'll talk through what to expect early on so you can plan accordingly.
Questions about full-service furnishing
-
We don't, and there's a good reason for it. Our process is designed to make things easier and more cohesive, not to send you on weekend store runs.
When you work with CPI Interiors, we handle the sourcing through our carefully built network of trusted suppliers and manufacturers. Every piece is chosen specifically for your home, taking into account scale, function, durability, and how it all fits together as a whole.
Instead of spending Saturdays bouncing between showrooms and second-guessing every decision, you're presented with thoughtfully curated options we've already narrowed down for you.
At your presentation, we bring everything together — samples, finishes, drawings, and product selections — so you can see exactly how it'll all come together in your space.
Most clients are surprised by how much time, stress, and decision fatigue this approach saves them.
-
Every project is different, and timelines depend on the scope of work, construction schedules, and product lead times.
For furnishing projects, custom upholstery and case goods usually take around 12 weeks from the time orders are placed.
One of the biggest perks of working with a full-service team is that we handle the scheduling, communication, and coordination throughout, keeping things moving as smoothly as possible.
-
Because most of the furnishings and materials we order are custom, made-to-order, or selected specifically for your home, returns generally aren't possible.
That said, we take a lot of care in sourcing every piece. If something arrives damaged or doesn't meet our standards, our team handles it directly with the supplier on your behalf.
That's one of the real benefits of working with a full-service team — you have someone advocating for you and quietly sorting things out behind the scenes if anything comes up.
-
Our process is built around creating cohesive, fully executed spaces, which means we manage both the design and the sourcing.
Every furnishing, finish, and material is chosen intentionally to work within the overall design plan. When items get sourced independently, it becomes much harder to keep the final result feeling cohesive, functioning the way it should, and meeting the level of quality we aim for.
One of the things clients tell us most often is that the biggest gift of working with CPI is not having to spend hours researching, comparing, coordinating, and second-guessing decisions on their own.
By letting us handle the sourcing, you end up with a more seamless experience and a finished home that feels complete, considered, and professionally pulled together.
-
We begin by meeting with you in your home to review your wish list. For decorating projects, we create a preliminary list of all the items your project will include, then ask you to confirm what you’re comfortable investing in each. From there, we compile the total budget.
For renovation projects, we start by discussing your desired investment and provide guidance on whether that aligns with the scope and quality of similar projects we’ve completed. The most accurate quote comes once the design is finalized, selections are made, and a contractor from our recommended network provides a detailed estimate.
Our goal is to ensure everyone is aligned before the project begins, so there are no surprises when it comes time for the presentation.
Questions about doing a kitchen renovation
-
We work with a small, trusted circle of Ottawa contractors and trades we've built strong relationships with over the years. They know our process and our standards, which keeps projects running smoothly.
-
We specialize in full kitchen renovations, not partial updates. That means we're not the right fit for a countertop swap, a backsplash replacement, or a single-element update. Our process is built around transforming a space completely so every decision works together as it should.
-
In most cases, yes, though it depends on the scope. A kitchen renovation typically means some disruption to daily life for the duration of the build. We'll walk you through what to expect early on so you can plan accordingly.
-
Not at all. Many clients come to us with a feeling they want the space to have, but aren't sure how to get there. Part of our role is helping uncover your style, refine your vision, and guide you toward possibilities you may not have considered on your own.
